The western wall

The western wall

The main entrance to the prison was via a heavy wooden gate midway down the stockade’s western wall.

Southwards, at the far end, towering above the stockade walls, was one of two stockade sentry boxes from which armed guards had a clear view of approaching boats and of activity inside the walls.

And in the far distance, the mainland shore.
