Brisbane to St Helena Island 1870s

Brisbane to St Helena Island

Twice weekly, the government steamer would depart Queen’s Wharf in Brisbane, carrying prisoners, supplies and visitors, journey downstream to the mouth of the Brisbane River, round Fisherman Islands, and complete the trip across Moreton Bay to St Helena Island. After off-loading, the steamer would usually continue the trip to the Benevolent Asylum (or poor house) at Dunwich on Stradbroke Island.
