The Prison Stockade, c.1890s

The Prison Stockade

On the hill at the end of the road from the jetty stood the prison stockade, its massive and cheerless wooden walls rising menacingly from the ground. The stockade fence was twelve feet high and built of six-inch by one-inch palings fixed to vertical hardwood posts.

By the 1890s this high fence was enclosing the prison—the celled prison wings, exercise yards, workshops, hospital, kitchen and the other facilities which comprised the complex – within an area of more than 170 yards by 100 yards, called the Stockade.
